My need to paint the natural world stems from a lifelong love of the outdoors and a wish to keep it fresh in memory. I am drawn to scenes that encourage reflection and contemplation. My paintings are not necessarily faithful reproductions of a specific place, but rather, give the viewer an opportunity to bring one's own vision to the experience.
I like to paint scenes that include only minimal human influence on the land, and show that peaceful coexistence with nature is possible in our often over-developed landscape. While I am influenced by the California Impressionist painters, my sense of color is derived from the Expressionist painters. I take the local color into consideration, and then change it to suit my personal interpretation.
